Luminaries
The Sun and Moon, the two brightest bodies in the sky, representing core identity and emotional nature in astrology.
In astrology, the term luminaries refers to the two brightest celestial bodies visible from Earth: the Sun and the Moon. Unlike the planets, which are wandering stars, the Sun and Moon are lights that govern day and night. Together they form the foundation of your personality — the conscious self (Sun) and the unconscious, emotional self (Moon).
How it works
In a natal chart, the Sun represents your core identity, ego, and life purpose. It's the sign you most identify with — your "star power." The Moon governs your emotional responses, instincts, habits, and the way you nurture yourself and others. While the Sun is about what you want to become, the Moon shows what you need to feel safe. Astrologers often look to the luminaries first when interpreting a chart, as they set the stage for the rest of the planets.
In practice
When reading a chart, the signs and houses of the Sun and Moon reveal your basic temperament. For example, a Sun in Aries suggests a bold, independent approach to life, while a Moon in Cancer points to deep emotional sensitivity and a need for home. Aspects between the luminaries and other planets also matter: a Sun-Mercury conjunction sharpens communication, while a Moon-Saturn square may indicate emotional restraint. In synastry (compatibility), the interaction of two people's luminaries often defines the relationship's core dynamic.
