Social Planets

Jupiter and Saturn, the planets that describe how we relate to society, rules, and long-term growth.

In astrology, the social planets are Jupiter and Saturn. They sit between the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) and the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). Unlike the personal planets, which describe individual personality and immediate interactions, the social planets reflect how we engage with the larger world — society, culture, institutions, and collective values.

How it works

Jupiter and Saturn move more slowly than the personal planets, spending about one year (Jupiter) and two to three years (Saturn) in each zodiac sign. Their positions in your natal chart show your approach to expansion, belief systems, education, and travel (Jupiter), as well as discipline, responsibility, boundaries, and authority (Saturn). For example, Jupiter in Sagittarius might indicate a love for philosophical exploration, while Saturn in Capricorn suggests a natural talent for building structures and long-term planning.

In practice

When interpreting a chart, the social planets reveal how you navigate societal expectations and where you find your place in the community. A well-aspected Jupiter often brings optimism and opportunity, while a challenged Saturn can show areas of restriction or lessons to master. Transits of Jupiter and Saturn mark significant life phases: Jupiter returns every 12 years (the "Jupiter return") signal expansion and luck; Saturn returns around ages 29 and 58 mark major maturity milestones.
