Domicile

A planet in its domicile is in the sign it rules, giving it strength and ease of expression.

In astrology, domicile (also called rulership) is one of the essential dignities. A planet is said to be in its domicile when it occupies the sign that it naturally rules. For example, Mars rules Aries, so Mars in Aries is in domicile. This placement gives the planet a sense of being at home — its energy flows naturally, without the constraints or adjustments needed in other signs.

How it works

Each of the seven traditional planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) rules one or two signs. The Sun rules Leo, the Moon rules Cancer, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mars rules Aries and Scorpio (traditionally), Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. When a planet is in its domicile, it is considered dignified — it can express its core nature with clarity and strength. In a natal chart, this often shows up as a prominent, confident energy in the areas of life governed by that planet and its house.

In practice

When reading a chart, a domiciled planet is a key strength. It suggests the person can access that planet's qualities easily and authentically. For example, Venus in Taurus (domicile) may indicate a natural sense of beauty, comfort, and loyalty in relationships. However, dignity doesn't guarantee positive outcomes — it simply means the planet's energy is unblocked. A domiciled Mars can be assertive and courageous, but if poorly aspected, it might also be overly aggressive. Look at the house and aspects to see how the energy plays out.
