Exaltation

Exaltation is a planet's second-highest dignity, where its energy is especially honored and expressed with ease.

Exaltation is a planet's second-highest dignity in traditional astrology, after rulership. When a planet is in its sign of exaltation, its energy is said to be especially honored, pure, and expressed with a natural grace. Unlike rulership, where the planet feels at home and in control, exaltation gives the planet a kind of spotlight—its qualities shine brightly and are often seen as a gift or strength.

How it works

Each planet has one sign of exaltation (and one sign of fall, the opposite). For example, the Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Saturn in Libra, and Jupiter in Cancer. In a natal chart, if a planet is in its exaltation sign, it operates with heightened positive expression. The house and aspects still matter, but the sign placement gives the planet a boost. Exaltation is considered a major dignity in horary and electional astrology, and it also carries weight in natal interpretation.

In practice

When you see an exalted planet in a chart, it often points to an area of life where the person can express that planet's energy with unusual ease or recognition. For instance, an exalted Venus in Pisces might indicate a deeply compassionate and artistic nature. However, exaltation doesn't mean perfection—it can also amplify the planet's shadow if other chart factors are challenging. In synastry, an exalted planet in one person's chart can be especially admired by the other.
