Detriment

A planet in detriment is in the sign opposite its rulership, weakening its expression.

In astrology, a planet is said to be in detriment when it occupies the sign opposite to the one it rules. This placement is considered a debility because the planet's energy is uncomfortable, constrained, or working against the sign's natural tendencies.

How it works

Each planet has a sign where it feels at home (its domicile or rulership). The sign directly opposite that is its detriment. For example:

  • The Sun rules Leo, so it is in detriment in Aquarius.
  • The Moon rules Cancer, so it is in detriment in Capricorn.
  • Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, so it is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces.
  • Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so it is in detriment in Scorpio and Aries.
  • Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, so it is in detriment in Libra and Taurus.
  • Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, so it is in detriment in Gemini and Virgo.
  • Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, so it is in detriment in Cancer and Leo.

When a planet is in detriment, its core qualities are challenged by the opposing sign's nature. For instance, Venus in Aries (detriment) may express love impulsively rather than harmoniously.

In practice

In a natal chart, a planet in detriment often indicates an area of life where you may feel insecure, overcompensate, or need to develop extra awareness. It doesn't mean failure—it shows where growth is needed. For example, Mercury in Pisces (detriment) might struggle with clear communication but excel at intuitive understanding. The key is to recognize the tension and work with it consciously.
