Moon Sign Calculator: what is my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. It describes your emotional needs: what comforts you, how you react under stress and what makes a place feel like home. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so enter your birth date, time and city to find yours.

What your Moon sign means

In astrology the Moon stands for your inner life: instincts, moods, habits and the kind of care you need. Where the Sun describes what you're working toward, the Moon describes what restores you. It tends to show most in private: at home, when you're tired, with the people you trust.

Knowing your Moon sign won't tell you what will happen to you. It can make it easier to understand your reactions and to ask for what you need, instead of assuming others should already know.

How each Moon sign tends to feel, cope and recharge. Your Moon's house and aspects, visible in the full chart, shape how this plays out for you.

Moon in Aries

Fire

Feelings flare fast, then clear

An Aries Moon feels things quickly and directly. Frustration, excitement, hurt: they arrive at full volume and usually pass just as fast. You feel safest when you can do something about a problem, so waiting is hard. You need independence even in close relationships. Movement, sport or any honest outlet helps you process before feelings turn into snapping.

Moon in Taurus

Earth

Comfort, stability, slow trust

With a Taurus Moon you need emotional steadiness. Familiar routines, good food, touch and a calm home settle you better than any pep talk. You're loyal and patient, and you don't rattle easily. Change is harder: you may hold on to situations past their best. Giving yourself time to adjust works better than forcing it or resisting it outright.

Moon in Gemini

Air

Talks feelings through

A Gemini Moon understands emotions by naming them. You feel better after a conversation, a voice note to a friend or a few pages of writing. Curiosity and variety keep your mood up; boredom drags it down. Sometimes you explain a feeling instead of feeling it. Letting an emotion sit for a moment before analysing it can make it lighter.

Moon in Cancer

Water

Deep feeling, strong need for home

The Moon is at home in Cancer, so feelings run deep and memories run long. You need a safe base, close people and a sense of belonging. You notice how others feel and instinctively take care of them. When hurt, you may retreat into your shell. Asking directly for the care you give so freely is one of the most useful habits for this Moon.

Moon in Leo

Fire

Warm-hearted, needs to feel seen

A Leo Moon feels most secure when it's appreciated. You're generous, playful and loyal, and you bring warmth to the people you love. Being ignored or taken for granted can sting more than open conflict. Creative self-expression, whether performing, making things or hosting, restores you. Remembering your worth doesn't depend on applause keeps your heart steady.

Moon in Virgo

Earth

Calms down by sorting things out

A Virgo Moon handles emotion through usefulness. You feel better once there's a plan, a tidy space or a problem you can fix, and you show love in practical ways: remembering details, helping quietly. Worry is the shadow side, because your mind keeps scanning for what could go wrong. Simple routines and kindness toward your own imperfections help most.

Moon in Libra

Air

Needs harmony and a sounding board

With a Libra Moon you feel balanced when your relationships are. Conflict, rudeness or ugliness around you is genuinely unsettling, so you often smooth things over. You process feelings best with someone to talk them through. The risk is keeping the peace at your own cost; your calm grows when honest disagreement is allowed to be part of closeness.

Moon in Scorpio

Water

Feels intensely, trusts carefully

A Scorpio Moon feels everything at depth, even when it shows little. Loyalty and emotional honesty matter enormously, and you sense undercurrents others miss. Betrayal is hard to forget. You need privacy and a few people who can handle the real you. Letting feelings move, rather than keeping them locked down, is where this Moon finds its strength.

Moon in Sagittarius

Fire

Needs space and something ahead

A Sagittarius Moon stays upbeat by having room to move: travel, learning, a plan for later. You process feelings by finding the bigger meaning in them, and humour is your favourite way to cope. Feeling hemmed in makes you restless fast. Sometimes optimism skips over a real feeling; letting yourself be sad for a while is part of the adventure too.

Moon in Capricorn

Earth

Steady outside, feeling in private

A Capricorn Moon keeps feelings contained and practical. You feel safe when life is under control and you've earned your place, and you may have grown up quickly. People lean on your steadiness. You might downplay your own needs or treat rest as something to earn. Accepting support, not just giving it, keeps this Moon from running on empty.

Moon in Aquarius

Air

Needs freedom and room to think

An Aquarius Moon approaches feelings with some distance, preferring to understand them before diving in. Friendship, independence and being accepted as you are matter most. You're loyal to your people and your principles, but crowding or emotional pressure makes you withdraw. Noticing what your body feels before your mind explains it helps you stay connected.

Moon in Pisces

Water

Empathic, absorbs the mood

A Pisces Moon is deeply sensitive and imaginative. You pick up on other people's feelings almost physically, and compassion comes naturally. Music, art, water and quiet time help you reset. Because you absorb so much, you need clear boundaries and real rest, or you can drift into escape. Your sensitivity becomes a strength once it has a container.

How we calculate your Moon sign

We convert your birth time to Universal Time using your city's timezone history, then compute the Moon's apparent position with a full lunar theory (the series published by Jean Meeus, derived from ELP), corrected for nutation. That gives the Moon's tropical zodiac longitude, its sign and its exact degree.

The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, the fastest of any body in the chart, which is why your time and timezone matter. The engine is the same one behind every Astraly birth chart, and it's deterministic: the same birth data always gives the same result.

Don't know your birth time?

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it spends roughly two and a half days in each sign. For most birthdays the date alone is enough. But on about 44% of days, the Moon changes sign at some point between midnight and midnight.

Leave the time blank and we check your whole birth day in your birth city's timezone. If the Moon stayed in one sign, you get a definite answer. If it changed, we show both signs and the exact local time of the switch. Even a rough sense of when you were born (morning or evening) usually settles it; if not, read both descriptions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Moon sign?

Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator above. You'll get your Moon sign and its exact degree instantly, free and without signing up.

Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?

Usually, yes. The Moon stays in each sign for about two and a half days, so for most dates it's in one sign all day. If it changed on your birthday, the calculator shows both signs and the local time it switched.

What's the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?

Your Sun sign depends on the time of year and describes your core identity and drive. Your Moon sign depends on where the Moon was that day and describes your emotional needs and instincts. Most people have different Sun and Moon signs.

Why does my Moon sign feel more like me than my Sun sign?

That's common. The Moon describes how you feel and react day to day, often in private, which can feel more familiar than the Sun's long-term goals. Both are you; the full chart shows how they work together.

What is the rarest Moon sign?

There isn't one. The Moon passes through all twelve signs every 27.3 days, so each Moon sign is about equally common over the years. What makes your Moon specific is its degree, house and aspects.

Is my Moon sign the same as the Moon phase I was born under?

No. The phase (new, waxing, full, waning) is about the angle between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in. Your full chart shows both.
