Rising Sign Calculator: find your Ascendant

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. It shapes your first impression and the way you approach anything new. Enter your birth date, time and city to find yours, with the exact degree.

Birth time matters most here: the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours.

What your rising sign means

The Ascendant marks the start of your first house, the part of the chart about your body, your style and the instinctive way you begin things. It's often described as a mask, but it works more like a doorway: the rest of your chart is expressed through it. That's why two people with the same Sun sign can come across completely differently.

Your rising sign also decides your chart ruler, the planet that rules the sign on your Ascendant. A Scorpio rising, for example, looks to Pluto and Mars; a Libra rising to Venus. Where that planet sits in your chart adds a lot to the story.

The 12 rising signs

A short, honest read of each Ascendant. These describe tendencies and first impressions, not fixed traits; the rest of your chart adds the nuance.

Aries rising

Fire

Direct, quick, first through the door

With Aries rising you meet the world head-on. People tend to read you as energetic, candid and a little impatient, and new situations wake you up rather than unsettle you. Your first instinct is to act, then adjust. The growth edge is pacing: not every room needs you to lead it, and a beat before reacting often lands better than speed.

Taurus rising

Earth

Calm, steady, quietly magnetic

Taurus rising gives a grounded, unhurried first impression. You size up a situation before stepping in, and others often find your presence reassuring. Comfort, good materials and a pleasant setting matter to you more than you might admit. You change your mind slowly, which reads as reliability on good days and stubbornness on tired ones.

Gemini rising

Air

Curious, chatty, quick to connect

Gemini rising meets life with questions. You often come across as lively, witty and younger than your years, and you put people at ease by talking. Variety keeps you engaged, while routine without novelty drains you. The flip side is scattered attention: you may start more threads than you finish, so choosing a few to follow through really helps.

Cancer rising

Water

Warm, protective, reads the room

With Cancer rising you approach new people carefully, sensing the mood before you show much of yourself. Once you feel safe you're warm, funny and fiercely protective of your people, and others tend to find you approachable and kind. Your guard can look like moodiness; usually it's you checking whether a space is emotionally safe.

Leo rising

Fire

Warm presence, natural spotlight

Leo rising tends to fill a room. People notice your warmth, your style and the way you light up when you're engaged, often before you've said much. You lead with generosity and want what you do to carry your personal stamp. Recognition matters to you; learning that you're worth something even when no one is applauding is part of the path.

Virgo rising

Earth

Observant, helpful, quietly precise

Virgo rising notices what others miss. You usually come across as composed, modest and competent, the person who quietly fixes what's broken. You approach life by analysing and improving it. That same lens can turn inward as self-criticism, so it helps to give your own rough drafts the patience you give everyone else's.

Libra rising

Air

Gracious, diplomatic, easy to like

With Libra rising you lead with charm and fairness. People experience you as pleasant, stylish and easy to talk to, and you naturally look for common ground. You're tuned to how others feel, which makes you a good mediator. The challenge is knowing your own preference before weighing everyone else's, and saying it out loud.

Scorpio rising

Water

Intense, private, hard to read

Scorpio rising gives an intense, self-contained first impression. You observe before revealing anything, and people may feel you see more than you say. You trust slowly and commit deeply once you do. Your strength is emotional honesty and nerve in hard moments; your work is letting a few people in without running every test first.

Sagittarius rising

Fire

Open, restless, optimistic

Sagittarius rising meets life with enthusiasm and a wide-angle lens. You come across as friendly, frank and up for anything, especially if it involves travel, ideas or a good story. Freedom matters to you, and you resist anything that feels like a cage. Your bluntness is usually honesty; delivering it with a little more care keeps doors open.

Capricorn rising

Earth

Composed, capable, serious on the surface

With Capricorn rising you tend to present as reserved, capable and older than your age, especially when young. You approach new situations by working out the rules and your role in them, and people trust you with responsibility. Under the composure there's often a dry wit and more feeling than you show; letting it out isn't a weakness.

Aquarius rising

Air

Independent, original, friendly but cool

Aquarius rising comes across as original and a little hard to categorise. You're often friendly with everyone and close to few, interested in ideas, causes and how things could work differently. You need room to be yourself. Others may read your detachment as coolness; often it's just you thinking, and you can show more warmth than people expect.

Pisces rising

Water

Gentle, intuitive, softly changeable

Pisces rising gives a gentle, open, slightly dreamy first impression. You absorb the mood around you and adapt to it, which makes people feel understood. Creative and spiritual interests often pull at you. Because you take so much in, boundaries matter: knowing which feelings are yours and which belong to the room protects your energy.

How we calculate your rising sign

First we convert your local birth time to Universal Time using your birth city's timezone history, including any daylight saving time in force that day. From that moment and your city's latitude and longitude we compute local sidereal time, then the exact degree of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon. That degree is your Ascendant; its sign is your rising sign.

It's the same engine behind every Astraly birth chart: VSOP87 planetary theory and Placidus houses, the standard most professional astrology software uses. The math is deterministic, so the same birth data always gives the same answer. AI is used only later, to interpret a chart, never to calculate it.

Don't know your birth time?

Unlike your Sun sign, your rising sign can't be found from the date alone. All twelve signs rise over the course of every day, each for roughly one to three hours depending on your latitude and the season. So if you leave the time blank, we don't pretend: we scan your entire birth day and show every rising sign with the hours it covered.

Even a rough idea (early morning, after lunch, late at night) is often enough to narrow it down to one or two signs. Birth certificates, hospital records and baby books are the usual sources. If two signs remain, read both descriptions; many people recognise their Ascendant right away. An astrologer can also narrow it further through rectification, matching life events to the chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is my rising sign?

Your rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date, exact time and city in the calculator above to get it instantly, with the exact degree.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not exactly, because the rising sign changes about every two hours. Leave the time blank and the calculator shows every rising sign of your birth day with the hours it covered, so you can narrow it down from what you know.

Why is my rising sign different on another site?

Almost always because of the birth time or timezone. A few minutes matter when your Ascendant sits near the edge of a sign, and some sites ignore historical daylight saving time. We use your city's full timezone history and the tropical zodiac, like most Western astrologers.

How accurate is this rising sign calculator?

The Ascendant is computed to a fraction of a degree from the data you enter. In practice your birth time sets the accuracy: the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time rounded to the half hour can shift it by several degrees. We warn you when you're close to a sign change.

Is my rising sign more important than my Sun sign?

Neither is more important; they describe different things. The Sun is your core drive, the Moon your emotional needs, and the rising sign how you meet the world. That's why astrologers read them together as your big three.

Does my rising sign change as I get older?

No. Your natal Ascendant is fixed at birth. What changes are transits (planets crossing your Ascendant now) and progressions, which some astrologers use to describe how your style evolves over the years.
