Ascendant
The Ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, shaping your outward personality and first impressions.
The Ascendant (also called the rising sign) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It represents the mask you wear in public, your spontaneous reactions, and the first impression you make on others. While your Sun sign reflects your core identity, the Ascendant shows how you approach new situations and how others perceive you.
How it works
In a natal chart, the Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st House and sets the entire house system. It changes approximately every two hours, so an accurate birth time is essential. The sign on the Ascendant influences your physical appearance, demeanor, and instinctive style. For example, a Leo Ascendant often gives a warm, confident presence, while a Virgo Ascendant may appear more reserved and analytical. The ruler of the Ascendant (the planet that rules that sign) is called the chart ruler and plays a key role in your life path.
In practice
When interpreting a chart, the Ascendant is one of the "Big Three" along with the Sun and Moon. It colors how you express your Sun sign traits. For instance, a Cancer Sun with an Aries Ascendant may come across as assertive and direct, belying their sensitive core. Aspects to the Ascendant also matter: planets conjunct the Ascendant strongly influence your personality, while a challenging aspect (like a square) can create tension between your inner self and outer expression.
To discover your own Ascendant, you need your exact birth time. You can generate your full natal chart on Astraly, which automatically calculates your rising sign and all house placements.
