Big Three Calculator: your Sun, Moon and Rising
Your big three are your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, the three placements that say the most about you. The Sun is your core identity, the Moon your emotional needs and the Rising sign how you come across. Enter your birth date, time and city to calculate all three, with exact degrees and what your combination means.
Calculate your big three
Sun and Moon need only your date. The Rising sign needs your birth time.
Why the big three matter
Your Sun sign alone puts you in a group with one twelfth of humanity. Add the Moon and the Rising sign and the picture sharpens fast: a Leo with a Capricorn Moon and Virgo rising comes across nothing like a Leo with a Sagittarius Moon and Aries rising. Reading the three together gives a quick, surprisingly specific portrait, which is why "what's your big three?" has become the standard astrology introduction.
- Sun
- your core drive and identity: what you're building and what makes you feel most yourself.
- Moon
- your emotional needs and instincts: what comforts you and how you react when stressed.
- Rising
- your first impression and approach: how you start things and how others first see you.

How we calculate your big three
The Sun's position comes from the VSOP87 theory of the Earth's orbit, accurate to well under one arcminute. The Moon comes from a full lunar theory (Meeus, derived from ELP), corrected for nutation. The Rising sign comes from local sidereal time at your birthplace: we convert your birth time to Universal Time using your city's timezone and daylight-saving history, then find the degree on the eastern horizon.
It's the same deterministic engine that builds every Astraly birth chart: identical input, identical result. AI only enters later, when it interprets a chart, never in the math.
Don't know your birth time?
You can still get most of your big three. The Sun sign is fixed for the whole day except on the rare days it changes sign, and the Moon is usually in one sign all day too. The Rising sign is the one that truly needs a time, because all twelve signs rise during every day.
Leave the time blank and we'll scan your birth day: you'll see every Rising sign that was possible, with the hours each one covered, plus a note if the Sun or Moon changed sign that day. A rough idea of when you were born is often enough to narrow it down.
Frequently asked questions
What is my big three in astrology?
Your big three are your Sun, Moon and Rising (Ascendant) signs. Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator above to get all three for free, with exact degrees.
Do I need my birth time for my big three?
For the Rising sign, yes. Your Sun and usually your Moon can be found from the date alone, but the Rising sign changes about every two hours. Without a time, the calculator shows every possible Rising sign for your birth day.
What does it mean if my Sun, Moon and Rising are the same sign?
A triple placement (say, Sun, Moon and Rising all in Taurus) concentrates that sign's themes, so people tend to see them in you clearly. It isn't better or worse, just more focused; the rest of your chart still adds plenty of nuance.
Which of the big three is most important?
They work as a team: the Sun is the core, the Moon the inner life, the Rising sign the interface with the world. Many astrologers give the Rising sign extra weight because it sets the houses and the chart ruler for the whole chart.
How many big three combinations are there?
12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728. Instead of reading a canned paragraph for each, it's more useful to see how the elements of your three signs combine, which the calculator does, and then look at the full chart, where houses and aspects make your version specific.
Is the big three the same as a birth chart?
No, it's the headline. A full birth chart also includes Mercury through Pluto, the twelve houses and the aspects between planets. Our free birth chart calculator shows all of it.
