Cusp

The boundary line between two astrological houses, where one house ends and another begins.

In astrology, a cusp is the dividing line between two houses in a natal chart. Each house begins at a specific degree of a zodiac sign, and that starting point is called the house cusp. The most important cusp is the Ascendant (1st house cusp), followed by the Midheaven (10th house cusp).

How it works

A natal chart is divided into 12 houses, each representing different life areas. The cusp marks where one house ends and the next begins. For example, if your 2nd house cusp is at 15° Taurus, then the 2nd house starts at that degree and spans until the 3rd house cusp. Planets located near a cusp (within a few degrees) are said to be "on the cusp" and may blend the energies of both houses. Some astrologers use the "5-degree rule": a planet within 5° of the next house cusp is interpreted as if it were in that house.

In practice

When reading a chart, pay attention to planets close to a cusp. For instance, if your Sun is at 28° Leo in the 11th house but only 2° from the 12th house cusp, its expression may carry themes of both houses—community and friendships (11th) mixed with solitude and introspection (12th). House cusps themselves are sensitive points; transiting planets crossing a cusp can activate that house's themes. The exact degree of each cusp depends on your birth time and location, so accurate data is essential.
