Angles

The four most important points in a natal chart: Ascendant, Descendant, MC, and IC.

In astrology, the Angles are the four cardinal points of a natal chart: the Ascendant (rising sign), Descendant (setting sign), Midheaven (MC), and Imum Coeli (IC). They form the cross that divides the chart into four quadrants, establishing the framework for the houses and the overall personality structure.

How it works

The Angles are determined by the exact time and location of birth. The Ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and it sets the first house cusp. Opposite it is the Descendant (seventh house cusp), representing relationships. The MC (Medium Coeli) is the highest point in the chart, marking the tenth house cusp and career/public life. Opposite the MC is the IC (Imum Coeli), the fourth house cusp, tied to home and roots. Any planet conjunct an angle becomes highly influential.

In practice

When reading a chart, the Angles are the first points to examine. The Ascendant reveals your outward style and first impressions, while the MC shows your ambitions. A planet near an angle amplifies its energy—for example, Venus near the Descendant suggests a strong focus on partnerships. The Angles also anchor the house system: without them, the chart has no orientation.
