Equal House System

A method for dividing the birth chart into twelve houses of equal 30° arcs, starting from the Ascendant.

The Equal House System is one of the simplest methods for dividing the zodiac into twelve houses in a natal chart. In this system, each house spans exactly 30° of the ecliptic, beginning from the degree of the Ascendant. The Ascendant becomes the cusp (starting point) of the 1st house, and the remaining houses follow in order around the zodiac.

How it works

To calculate an Equal House chart, the astrologer first determines the Ascendant (the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth). Then, each subsequent house cusp is placed exactly 30° ahead of the previous one. For example, if the Ascendant is at 15° Aries, the 2nd house cusp is at 15° Taurus, the 3rd at 15° Gemini, and so on. This creates a chart where the Midheaven (MC) is not necessarily the cusp of the 10th house; instead, the MC falls somewhere inside the 10th house, often near its midpoint. The Equal system is widely used in modern astrology, especially in psychological and horary traditions, because it keeps houses evenly sized and avoids the "intercepted houses" that can occur in quadrant systems like Placidus.

In practice

When reading a chart using the Equal House System, each house contains exactly one sign (though planets may fall into neighboring houses due to their actual zodiac positions). This makes house interpretations straightforward: the 1st house always corresponds to the sign of the Ascendant, the 2nd to the next sign, and so on. Astrologers often note that the Equal system emphasizes the Ascendant's role as the primary reference point, and it can be especially useful for understanding personal identity and life themes without the distortions that can happen at extreme latitudes.
