First House
The First House in astrology represents your self-image, physical appearance, and how you present to the world.
The First House is the most personal house in the birth chart, associated with your identity, physical body, and the mask you wear in public. It is the house of the self, ruling your first impressions, temperament, and overall approach to life. The sign on its cusp (the Ascendant) and any planets within it color your outward personality and how others perceive you.
How it works
The First House begins at the Ascendant, the point on the eastern horizon at your birth. Its cusp sign sets your rising sign, which is one of the three most important placements in your chart (along with Sun and Moon). Planets in the First House strongly influence your self-expression and physical appearance. For example, Mars here can make you assertive and athletic, while Venus may give a charming, graceful demeanor. The house spans roughly 30 degrees, but its actual size varies depending on the house system used.
In practice
When interpreting the First House, look first at the Ascendant sign and any planets within. A strong First House often indicates a person who is self-aware, proactive, and comfortable in the spotlight. Challenges arise when difficult planets like Saturn or Pluto occupy this house, which can create self-doubt or a need for control. In synastry, another person's planets falling into your First House can feel intense, as they directly affect your sense of self.
