Progressions

A predictive technique in astrology that moves the natal chart forward by one day for each year of life to reveal inner development.

Progressions are a predictive astrology technique that symbolically moves the natal chart forward in time. The most common method, secondary progressions, uses the 'day-for-a-year' rule: each day after birth corresponds to one year of life. For example, the planetary positions 30 days after your birth represent your age 30. Progressions reflect inner psychological development and evolving themes, rather than external events.

How it works

To calculate secondary progressions, an astrologer takes the ephemeris for the days following your birth and maps them to years of your life. The progressed Sun moves about one degree per year, marking shifts in identity and life focus. The progressed Moon changes sign roughly every 2.5 years, highlighting emotional cycles. Progressed Mercury, Venus, and Mars move more slowly. Progressed aspects—such as a progressed planet making a conjunction to a natal planet—signal significant turning points. The progressed chart is interpreted alongside the natal chart and current transits.

In practice

In a reading, progressions show when you are ready to evolve. A progressed Sun entering a new sign suggests a new life chapter. A progressed Moon changing sign indicates a shift in emotional needs. Progressed planets aspecting natal planets often coincide with decisions or realizations. Unlike transits, which reflect external circumstances, progressions describe your inner readiness. They work best as a timing tool for personal growth, not for predicting specific events.
