Secondary Progressions

A predictive technique where each day after birth equals one year of life, revealing inner psychological shifts.

Secondary Progressions are a predictive method in astrology that maps the inner evolution of a person over time. The core principle is simple: each day after your birth corresponds to one year of your life. So, the planetary positions on the 30th day after your birth represent your 30th year. This technique reveals psychological and emotional shifts, not external events.

How it works

To calculate Secondary Progressions, an astrologer takes your natal chart and advances it by adding one day for each year of life. For example, if you are 25 years old, the progressed chart uses planetary positions 25 days after your birth. The most significant changes come from the progressed Moon, which moves about one degree per month (or 12–13 degrees per year) and changes signs roughly every 2.5 years. Progressed Sun moves about one degree per year, marking major life phases. Progressed planets can also change direction (direct to retrograde or vice versa), signaling new cycles.

In practice

When reading a progressed chart, astrologers look for aspects between progressed planets and natal planets. A progressed Moon conjunct your natal Venus might indicate a period of heightened social activity or creativity. A progressed Sun changing signs (e.g., from Aries to Taurus) often coincides with a shift in identity or life focus. Progressions work best when combined with transits for timing. They describe your inner readiness for change, not the external trigger.

To see your own Secondary Progressions, you can generate your natal chart and explore progressed positions using a tool like Astraly's chart.
