Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun's light.
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth. In astrology, a solar eclipse is treated as an amplified new moon — a moment of heightened potential for new beginnings, but also for sudden changes or revelations. Eclipses often mark turning points in the areas of life ruled by the sign and house where they occur.
How it works
Solar eclipses occur only during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are conjunct (at the same degree of the same sign). Because the Moon blocks the Sun's light, the eclipse is considered a time when the usual solar energy is obscured, making it harder to see clearly. In a natal chart, a solar eclipse activates the house and sign it falls in, and any planets or points it contacts. The effects can last for months, often unfolding in two phases: the initial event or realization around the eclipse date, and a later culmination or resolution about six months later, when the Sun opposes the eclipse degree.
In practice
When interpreting a solar eclipse, note the house and sign it occupies in your chart. For example, an eclipse in your 10th house might coincide with a career shift or public recognition. Eclipses often bring external events that feel fated or out of your control — they can push you onto a new path. Pay attention to any planets within a few degrees of the eclipse, as they will be strongly triggered. It's wise to avoid making major decisions on the exact day of an eclipse, as information may be incomplete. Instead, wait a few days for clarity.
