Decanate

A decanate is a 10-degree subdivision of a zodiac sign, giving each sign three distinct faces with different planetary rulers.

A decanate (also called a decan) is a 10-degree subdivision of a zodiac sign. Each 30-degree sign is divided into three decanates, each with its own planetary sub-ruler. This adds nuance to a planet's expression, layering the sign's energy with a secondary influence.

How it works

The first decanate (0°–9°59') is ruled by the sign's own planetary ruler. The second decanate (10°–19°59') is ruled by the next planet in the same triplicity (element). The third decanate (20°–29°59') is ruled by the third planet in that triplicity. For example, Aries (ruled by Mars) has decanates: 1st decanate Mars, 2nd decanate Sun (fire triplicity), 3rd decanate Jupiter (fire). A planet at 15° Aries is in the second decanate, blending Aries with a Solar flair.

In practice

When reading a chart, decanates refine interpretation. A Venus in Taurus at 5° (first decanate) expresses Taurus qualities directly. At 25° (third decanate), it adds a Capricornian touch (earth triplicity), making it more disciplined. Decanates are especially useful for timing and for understanding subtle differences between people with the same Sun sign.
