Critical Degree

A critical degree is a specific degree in a zodiac sign that is believed to carry extra weight or intensity in a birth chart.

A critical degree is a specific degree within a zodiac sign that is traditionally considered to carry extra significance or intensity. These degrees are often associated with turning points, heightened energy, or a sense of fate. The most commonly recognized critical degrees are 0°, 13°, and 26° of any sign, though some systems also include 29° (the anaretic degree).

How it works

In a natal chart, a planet or angle (like the Ascendant or Midheaven) positioned at a critical degree is thought to operate with more urgency or potency. For example, a planet at 0° of a sign is said to be in its "first burst" of energy, while 13° and 26° are considered points of crisis or culmination. The 29th degree, known as the anaretic degree, is often seen as a degree of urgency or a final push before a transition. When interpreting your chart, you can check if any planets or house cusps fall on these degrees.

In practice

If you have a planet at a critical degree, it may manifest as a strong, almost compulsive drive in that area of life. For instance, Mercury at 0° of Gemini might indicate a sharp, eager mind that jumps into new ideas quickly. A planet at 29° of a sign can feel like a last-minute lesson or a need to complete unfinished business. During transits, when a planet hits your natal critical degree, events may feel more impactful or decisive.
