Sabian Symbol
A symbolic image associated with each degree of the zodiac, used for deeper chart interpretation.
Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 symbolic images, one for each degree of the zodiac. Developed by clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler and astrologer Marc Edmund Jones in 1925, they offer a poetic, intuitive layer of meaning beyond traditional sign and house interpretations. Each symbol captures a core theme or archetype for that degree, providing a snapshot of potential energies at play.
How it works
In a natal chart, every planet, angle, and point occupies a specific degree of a sign. That degree corresponds to a Sabian Symbol. For example, the Sun at 10° Aries corresponds to the symbol "A man teaching true inner knowledge." To find your symbols, you need your exact birth time and location. Astraly's chart tool automatically lists the Sabian Symbol for each planet and point when you view your natal chart.
In practice
Sabian Symbols are not predictive; they add nuance. If your Mercury is at 5° Gemini ("A radical magazine demanding new forms of expression"), you might have a talent for innovative communication. Use them as prompts for reflection rather than literal descriptions. They work best when combined with traditional aspects and house placements.
