Grand Cross

A Grand Cross is a rare aspect pattern where four planets form two oppositions and four squares, creating intense tension and a call for action.

A Grand Cross (also called a Grand Square) is a rare and powerful aspect pattern in astrology. It occurs when four planets are positioned at roughly 90-degree intervals, forming two oppositions and four squares. This creates a closed, cross-shaped configuration in the chart, often involving four signs of the same modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) but different elements.

How it works

In a natal chart, a Grand Cross appears as four planets spaced about 90° apart, each square to two others and opposite one. For example, planets at 0° Aries, 0° Cancer, 0° Libra, and 0° Capricorn would form a Cardinal Grand Cross. The pattern can span up to 10° orbs for squares and oppositions. Because all four points are linked by hard aspects, the energy is highly dynamic and often feels like being pulled in multiple directions at once.

In practice

A Grand Cross indicates a life theme centered on balancing conflicting drives. The person may feel constant pressure to integrate the energies of the four houses and signs involved. This pattern often leads to significant growth through struggle—the tension demands action, not passivity. The key is to find a constructive outlet for the friction, such as channeling the energy into a focused goal or creative project. The specific houses and planets reveal which areas of life are most affected.
