Yod

A Yod is a rare aspect pattern formed by two planets in sextile, both quincunx a third planet, creating a focused point of tension and destiny.

A Yod, also called the "Finger of God," is a rare aspect pattern in astrology. It consists of two planets in sextile (60° apart), both forming a quincunx (150° aspect) to a third planet. The third planet is the apex, receiving the energy of the other two. This pattern creates a narrow, focused triangle that suggests a special mission or area of intense growth.

How it works

In a natal chart, the Yod looks like an isosceles triangle. The two base planets are in sextile, which is a harmonious aspect, but each is also quincunx the apex. The quincunx is an awkward, adjustment-oriented aspect that demands integration. The apex planet becomes a pressure point: it represents a skill or life area that must be developed to balance the energies of the base planets. For example, if the apex is Mars in the 10th house, the person might feel driven to channel the base planets' energies into career ambition.

In practice

When interpreting a Yod, look at the houses and signs involved. The base planets often represent talents or resources that need to be combined to serve the apex. The apex is where the person may feel "called" or experience fated events. However, the Yod is not about easy success; it brings challenges that lead to growth. People with a prominent Yod often feel a sense of purpose but also frustration until they learn to work with the pattern. In a reading, note that the Yod's energy is subtle but persistent—it unfolds over a lifetime.
