Mars Retrograde

Mars Retrograde is a period when Mars appears to move backward in the sky, slowing down action and prompting inner reflection.

Mars Retrograde is a period when the planet Mars appears to move backward in its orbit from Earth's perspective. In astrology, this cycle occurs roughly every two years and lasts about 2–2.5 months. During this time, Mars's typical themes—assertion, drive, anger, and desire—turn inward. Rather than charging ahead, we're asked to review how we use our energy and handle conflict.

How it works

In a natal chart, Mars retrograde is marked by the symbol 'R' next to Mars. People born with Mars retrograde often express their assertiveness in indirect or internal ways. They may struggle with outward aggression but have a strong inner drive. Transiting Mars retrograde affects everyone: it's a time to slow down, revisit old projects, and reconsider how you pursue goals. Actions taken now may need revision later.

In practice

When Mars is retrograde in your chart or in the sky, notice where you feel frustrated or blocked. Instead of pushing harder, step back. Old conflicts may resurface—use this as a chance to resolve them with less heat. It's a poor time to start new ventures or confrontations, but excellent for reflection and strategy. Check your birth chart to see if you have natal Mars retrograde or to track the current transit on the astro calendar.
