Stationary Planet

A planet that appears to stop moving in the sky before changing direction, marking a period of intensified energy.

A stationary planet occurs when a planet appears to pause its motion through the zodiac before changing direction—either turning retrograde (stationary retrograde) or resuming direct motion (stationary direct). This apparent stillness is an optical illusion caused by Earth's changing position relative to the planet. In astrology, a stationary planet is considered especially powerful and concentrated in its energy, as if all its momentum is focused at a single point.

How it works

In an ephemeris or on a natal chart, a planet is marked as stationary when its ecliptic longitude remains nearly unchanged for several days. For example, if Mercury is about to go retrograde, it will slow down, stop, and then begin moving backward. The moment of the stop is its stationary point. In a birth chart, a stationary planet is extremely rare and significant—it suggests that the planet's themes are a central, intense focus in the person's life. The house and aspects of a stationary planet become amplified.

In practice

When interpreting a stationary planet in a chart, consider that the planet's energy is not diffused but concentrated. A stationary Mercury might indicate a mind that is deeply focused, obsessive, or brilliant in a specific area. A stationary Venus could point to a person whose values and relationships are fixed and powerful. Because the planet is at a standstill, its influence is less about movement and more about being—a fixed point of destiny or talent. In transit, a planet turning stationary often coincides with major events or decisions related to that planet's domain.
