Direct Motion
Direct motion is when a planet appears to move forward through the zodiac, its usual and strongest mode of expression.
In astrology, direct motion describes the apparent forward movement of a planet through the zodiac as seen from Earth. When a planet is direct, its energy flows freely and expresses itself in a straightforward, external manner. Most planets are direct most of the time, and this is considered their natural state.
How it works
A planet's motion is measured relative to the fixed stars. Because Earth orbits the Sun faster than outer planets, those planets occasionally appear to slow, stop, and reverse – that's retrograde motion. Direct motion resumes after the retrograde period ends. In your natal chart, a planet is either direct or retrograde; this status is marked with an 'R' or 'D' symbol. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde, so they are always direct.
In practice
When a planet is direct in your birth chart, its themes tend to manifest openly and without internal conflict. For example, a direct Mercury suggests clear communication and a direct approach to learning. During transits, a planet turning direct after retrograde often signals a time to move forward with plans that were delayed or reconsidered. It's a green light for action in the areas ruled by that planet.
