Waning Moon

The Waning Moon is the phase between Full Moon and New Moon, when the illuminated portion decreases each night.

The Waning Moon is the period from the Full Moon to the New Moon, when the visible surface of the Moon shrinks night after night. In astrology, this phase represents release, reflection, and letting go. It's a time to wind down projects, clear out what's no longer needed, and prepare for the new cycle ahead.

How it works

The Moon goes through eight phases in its 29.5-day cycle, and the Waning Moon covers the last four: Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent, and finally the New Moon (when the Moon is dark). In a natal chart, if you were born during a Waning Moon, your personality tends to be introspective, analytical, and oriented toward completion rather than initiation. You may feel more comfortable wrapping things up than starting fresh. The Waning Moon's decreasing light symbolizes a turning inward, making it an ideal time for journaling, meditation, and tying up loose ends.

In practice

When interpreting transits, the Waning Moon is a cue to slow down. If you have a question about timing, this phase suggests waiting, reviewing, or finishing before launching something new. In synastry, a partner with a Waning Moon might bring a grounding, reflective energy to the relationship, encouraging deeper understanding rather than constant action. Use this phase to reassess your goals, forgive, and release attachments that no longer serve you.
