Aspect

An angle between two planets in a birth chart that reveals how their energies interact.

An aspect is an angular relationship between two planets (or a planet and a point like the Ascendant) in a birth chart. It describes how the energies of those planets blend, challenge, or support each other. Aspects are measured in degrees along the zodiac circle and are grouped by type: major (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) and minor (quincunx, semi-sextile, etc.). Each aspect has an orb — a small range of degrees within which it is considered active.

How it works

In a natal chart, aspects are calculated by finding the exact degree difference between two planets. For example, if your Sun is at 10° Aries and your Moon is at 10° Libra, they are 180° apart — an opposition. A trine occurs at 120°, a square at 90°, a sextile at 60°, and a conjunction when planets are within the same degree (0°). The tighter the orb (usually within 5–8° for major aspects), the stronger the influence. Astrologers use aspect lines or a table of aspects to quickly see which planets are connected.

In practice

When reading a chart, aspects tell the story of how different parts of your personality interact. A trine between Venus and Jupiter often indicates ease with love and abundance, while a square between Mars and Saturn can show frustration or discipline in action. Aspects are not good or bad — they reveal dynamics. For instance, a challenging aspect might point to areas where growth happens through effort. In a synastry reading (comparing two charts), aspects between partners' planets highlight compatibility and tension.
