Applying Aspect

An aspect where the faster planet is moving toward an exact angle with a slower planet, building energy.

An applying aspect occurs when the faster-moving planet is moving toward an exact angle with a slower-moving planet. In a natal chart, this means the aspect is not yet exact but will become exact in the future (in the context of the chart's symbolic timeline). The energy is building, like a storm gathering on the horizon. Applying aspects are often felt as more dynamic, urgent, or fated compared to separating aspects, which have already passed their peak.

How it works

In a real natal chart, an aspect is considered applying if the faster planet has not yet reached the exact degree of the slower planet. For example, if the Moon (fast) is at 10° Aries and Mars (slow) is at 12° Aries, the Moon is applying to a conjunction with Mars because it is moving toward the exact 2° orb. The closer the planets are to exact, the stronger the applying influence. Astrologers often note that applying aspects are more active and compelling, as they represent a developing theme or challenge that the person is moving into.

In practice

When interpreting an applying aspect, pay attention to the sense of anticipation or pressure. The faster planet's energy is "reaching" toward the slower planet's energy, so the native may feel a drive to integrate or resolve those energies. For instance, an applying square between Mercury and Saturn might indicate a looming mental block or a need to discipline one's thinking. In synastry, applying aspects between two people's charts can suggest a relationship that feels evolving or fated, with a sense of "something is about to happen."
