Major Aspects

Major aspects are the five key angular relationships between planets in a birth chart that reveal core personality dynamics.

Major aspects are the five primary angular relationships between planets in a natal chart: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition. They describe how planets interact—whether they work together, challenge each other, or blend energies. Astrologers consider these aspects the building blocks of chart interpretation.

How it works

Each major aspect is defined by a specific number of degrees between two planets (the orb, or allowed error, is typically 6–10° for major aspects). A conjunction (0°) merges two planets' energies. A sextile (60°) creates a harmonious flow. A square (90°) generates tension and friction. A trine (120°) brings ease and talent. An opposition (180°) sets up polarity and awareness. In a chart, these aspects are shown as colored lines: red for squares and oppositions, blue for trines and sextiles, and green for conjunctions.

In practice

When reading a chart, look for clusters of major aspects—they highlight key themes. For example, a planet with several squares may indicate areas of struggle that drive growth. A planet with many trines suggests natural gifts. Oppositions often point to relationship dynamics or inner conflicts. Conjunctions show where energies combine, sometimes creating a powerful focal point. The balance of hard (square, opposition) and soft (trine, sextile) aspects gives a sense of how a person handles challenges and opportunities.
