Minor Aspects

Minor aspects are subtle astrological angles like sextiles, semisquares, and quincunxes that add nuance to a chart.

Minor aspects are astrological angles that are less commonly used than the five major aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition). They include the sextile (60°), semisquare (45°), sesquiquadrate (135°), quincunx (150°), and sometimes the quintile (72°) and biquintile (144°). These aspects add subtle layers of meaning, often describing underlying tensions, hidden talents, or areas of adjustment.

How it works

In a natal chart, minor aspects are calculated based on the angular distance between two planets. The sextile (60°) is considered harmonious, similar to a trine but weaker; it indicates opportunities that require conscious effort. The semisquare (45°) and sesquiquadrate (135°) are friction aspects, like a square but milder, suggesting minor irritations or persistent challenges. The quincunx (150°) is an adjustment aspect, often linked to health or practical matters, requiring adaptation. Quintiles (72°) relate to creativity and talent. Most chart calculation software includes these aspects, but they are often shown with thinner lines or different colors to distinguish them from major ones.

In practice

When reading a chart, minor aspects are not as impactful as major ones, but they add detail. A quincunx between the Moon and Saturn, for example, might show emotional discomfort that requires practical adjustments. A semisquare between Mercury and Mars could indicate a tendency to speak sharply under stress. Quintiles often point to natural creative gifts. Because minor aspects are subtle, they are best considered after the major aspects are understood. They can confirm themes or highlight areas that need extra attention.
