Separating Aspect

An aspect that is moving away from exactness, losing influence as the planets continue their orbits.

A separating aspect occurs when two planets have recently passed their exact angular relationship (e.g., conjunction, square, trine) and are now moving apart. In a natal chart, this means the aspect is waning in influence — the energy is fading or becoming less relevant to the person's ongoing development.

How it works

In a real natal chart, an aspect is considered separating if the faster-moving planet has already passed the exact degree of the aspect and is moving away from the slower planet. For example, if the Moon at 10° Aries is separating from a square to Mars at 12° Cancer, the Moon has already made the exact square and is now moving to a wider orb. Astrologers typically use an orb of 1–2 degrees for separating aspects, though this varies. The key is that the aspect is no longer exact and the planets are diverging.

In practice

When a separating aspect appears in a birth chart, it often points to a quality or event that was more prominent in the past — perhaps in early childhood or a previous life stage. The native may have already integrated the lesson or moved on from the tension. In transit readings, a separating aspect between a transiting planet and a natal planet suggests the peak of that transit's influence has passed. It's less potent than an applying aspect, which is building toward exactness.
