Astrology Glossary

Hemisphere

A division of the birth chart into two halves, revealing where planetary energy is concentrated.

In astrology, a hemisphere refers to one half of the birth chart, divided by either the horizon axis (Ascendant-Descendant) or the meridian axis (Midheaven-Imum Coeli). The four hemispheres are: northern (houses 1–6, below the horizon), southern (houses 7–12, above the horizon), eastern (houses 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, left side), and western (houses 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, right side).

How it works

To determine which hemisphere is emphasized, look at the distribution of planets in your natal chart. If most planets fall in the southern hemisphere (above the horizon), the person tends to be outwardly focused, career-oriented, and engaged with the public. A northern hemisphere emphasis (below the horizon) suggests a more private, introspective, and family-oriented nature. The eastern hemisphere (left side) indicates self-directed, independent energy, while the western hemisphere (right side) points to a focus on relationships and others.

In practice

When reading a chart, note if one hemisphere is heavily occupied (e.g., 7+ planets). A strong southern hemisphere can indicate a person who is visible and driven, while a northern emphasis may show someone who values inner life. Eastern hemisphere dominance suggests a pioneer, western a collaborator. Balance is common; extreme concentration often highlights life themes.
