Glyph
A glyph is a symbolic icon used in astrology to represent planets, signs, aspects, and other chart elements.
A glyph is a symbolic icon used in astrology to represent planets, zodiac signs, aspects, and other chart elements. Instead of writing out the full name (e.g., "Mars"), astrologers use a compact symbol (♂) to keep charts clean and readable. Glyphs are the visual language of astrology, allowing you to quickly scan a birth chart and identify key placements.
How it works
Each planet, sign, and major aspect has its own unique glyph. For example, the Sun is represented by a circle with a dot in the center (☉), the Moon by a crescent (☽), and Mars by a circle with an arrow (♂). Zodiac signs also have distinct glyphs: Aries looks like a ram's horns (♈), Taurus like a bull's head (♉), and so on. In a natal chart, these glyphs are placed inside the wheel to show which planets are in which signs and houses. Aspect glyphs (e.g., a square □, trine △) connect planets to show relationships.
In practice
When reading a chart, you'll see a list of glyphs arranged around the wheel. Learning to recognize them instantly speeds up interpretation. For example, spotting a Mars glyph (♂) in Aries (♈) tells you the planet is in its own sign, suggesting strong, direct energy. Aspect glyphs between planets highlight dynamic interactions. Most chart software and apps, including Astraly, display glyphs by default, so familiarizing yourself with them is a foundational skill.
