Opposition

An aspect where two planets sit 180° apart, creating tension and a push-pull dynamic that demands balance.

In astrology, an opposition occurs when two planets are about 180° apart (with an orb of up to 8–10° for major bodies). This aspect creates a polarity: the two energies face each other across the chart, often manifesting as a tug-of-war between different parts of your life or personality. Unlike the harsh clash of a square, an opposition feels more like a seesaw — you may swing between extremes until you find a middle ground.

How it works

On a natal chart, an opposition appears as a straight line across the wheel, with planets in opposite signs and houses. For example, a Sun opposite Moon might pit your conscious identity against your emotional needs, or a Venus opposite Mars can create tension between what you want (Venus) and how you pursue it (Mars). The houses involved show where this dynamic plays out — a 7th-house planet opposing a 1st-house planet often highlights relationship vs. self themes.

In practice

When interpreting an opposition, look for the two poles. The key is not to choose one side but to integrate both. For instance, with Saturn opposite Jupiter, you might feel torn between caution and risk-taking. The growth comes from learning when to expand and when to contract. Oppositions often point to areas where you project one side onto others — a classic example is seeing your own unowned anger in a partner. Awareness of the polarity is the first step toward balance.
