Quadrant
A quadrant is one of four 90° sections of a natal chart, each representing a different area of life experience.
A quadrant is one of four equal 90° sections of a natal chart, created by the horizon (Ascendant–Descendant axis) and the meridian (Midheaven–Imum Coeli axis). Each quadrant contains three houses and corresponds to a distinct area of life.
How it works
The first quadrant (houses 1–3) spans from the Ascendant to the Imum Coeli. It represents the self, personal identity, and immediate environment. The second quadrant (houses 4–6) runs from the IC to the Descendant, focusing on home, family, work, and daily routines. The third quadrant (houses 7–9) goes from the Descendant to the Midheaven, covering relationships, partnerships, and higher learning. The fourth quadrant (houses 10–12) extends from the MC back to the Ascendant, dealing with career, public life, and the collective.
Planets concentrated in one quadrant indicate a strong emphasis on that area of life. For example, many planets in the first quadrant suggest a strong focus on personal development, while a cluster in the fourth quadrant points to career and public recognition.
In practice
When interpreting a chart, look at which quadrants contain the most planets. A lopsided distribution can show where your main life themes lie. For instance, someone with several planets in the third quadrant may be relationship-oriented, while a chart heavy in the second quadrant might indicate a strong focus on daily routines and family. The quadrant balance gives a quick overview of life priorities.
