Quincunx

A 150° aspect between two planets, indicating a need for adjustment and integration of conflicting energies.

A quincunx (also called an inconjunct) is an astrological aspect formed when two planets are about 150 degrees apart. It is considered a minor challenging aspect, often associated with awkwardness, friction, and a sense of being out of sync. Unlike a square (90°) which is direct conflict, or an opposition (180°) which is polarity, the quincunx creates a subtle but persistent tension that requires adjustment and compromise.

How it works

In a natal chart, a quincunx appears when two planets are separated by five signs. The signs involved are usually incompatible in element and modality (e.g., fire and water, or mutable and fixed). This mismatch means the energies don't naturally blend. For example, a quincunx between the Sun in Aries (fire, cardinal) and the Moon in Virgo (earth, mutable) can create a conflict between impulsive action and meticulous analysis. The aspect is often identified by its orb of up to 3 degrees (some astrologers use up to 2°).

In practice

When interpreting a quincunx, look for areas of life where you feel a constant need to adjust or compensate. The planets involved represent two different drives that don't easily cooperate. For instance, Venus quincunx Saturn might manifest as difficulty balancing love and responsibility — you may feel you have to choose between intimacy and duty. The key is not to eliminate the tension but to find a middle ground. Over time, the quincunx can teach flexibility and resourcefulness.
