Sesquiquadrate
A minor challenging aspect of 135°, indicating friction and tension that requires adjustment.
The sesquiquadrate (135°) is a minor challenging aspect that creates a sense of friction, irritation, or unease. It is formed when two planets are three and a half signs apart (or 135 degrees). Unlike the square (90°) which is more direct and forceful, the sesquiquadrate is subtler—a persistent low-grade tension that nags at you until you address it.
How it works
In a natal chart, the sesquiquadrate shows up as a 135° angle between two planets. It is considered a "minor" aspect, but its effects are not necessarily weak. Because it belongs to the same family as the square and the opposition (the so-called "hard" aspects), it often points to areas where you feel a constant pull or irritation. For example, a sesquiquadrate between Mercury and Saturn might manifest as a nagging feeling that you're not communicating clearly enough, or that you need to double-check every detail. The orb (allowed deviation) is usually small—around 2° to 3°.
In practice
When you encounter a sesquiquadrate in a reading, pay attention to the planets involved. The friction is often a sign that something needs to be adjusted or refined. Unlike a square, which demands immediate action, the sesquiquadrate asks for small, incremental changes. For instance, a Venus sesquiquadrate Mars might show up as a subtle tension in relationships—not outright conflict, but a sense that you're not quite in sync. The key is to notice the pattern and make conscious tweaks rather than ignoring it.
To explore your own aspects, generate your natal chart and look for the 135° symbol (⛎ or a small angle icon).
