Square

A challenging 90° aspect between two planets that creates tension, friction, and motivation for growth.

A square is an aspect formed when two planets are 90 degrees apart in the zodiac. It's considered a hard or challenging aspect, often bringing friction, obstacles, and internal conflict. But rather than being purely negative, a square acts as a catalyst for growth, pushing you to take action and develop resilience.

How it works

In a natal chart, a square appears as a red line between two planets. The signs involved are of the same modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) but different elements, which creates a clash of energies. For example, a square between the Sun and Moon might show a conflict between your core identity and emotional needs. The tension isn't comfortable, but it demands resolution.

In practice

When interpreting a square, look at the planets and houses involved. The friction often points to an area of life where you feel stuck or challenged. But that tension is also your drive to overcome. A square between Mars and Saturn, for instance, can indicate frustration with delayed action, yet it builds discipline and perseverance. Squares are where you grow the most.
