Composite Chart

A composite chart blends two natal charts into one, revealing the unique energy and purpose of a relationship.

A composite chart is a single chart calculated from the midpoint positions of two individuals' planets and houses. It represents the relationship itself as a third entity, showing its unique strengths, challenges, and purpose. Unlike synastry, which compares two charts, the composite chart blends them into one.

How it works

To create a composite chart, astrologers take the midpoint of each pair of planets (e.g., your Sun and your partner's Sun) and calculate a new planet position. The same is done for houses by averaging the cusp degrees. The result is a chart that belongs to neither person alone but to the bond they share. For example, a composite Sun in Leo suggests the relationship thrives on creative expression and mutual admiration, while a composite Moon in Cancer indicates emotional nurturing and a need for security.

In practice

When reading a composite chart, focus on the Sun and Moon first—they reveal the relationship's core identity and emotional foundation. The composite Ascendant shows how the partnership appears to others. Challenging aspects (squares, oppositions) point to recurring tensions that need conscious work. For instance, a composite Mars square Saturn may indicate frustration or power struggles around initiative and boundaries. The composite chart is especially useful for long-term partnerships, business collaborations, or family dynamics.
