Compatibility
Compatibility in astrology measures how two charts interact, revealing strengths and challenges in a relationship.
In astrology, compatibility refers to the dynamic between two people's natal charts. It's not about predicting if a relationship will succeed, but about understanding the natural flow of energy, communication, and emotional connection. Compatibility is most commonly assessed through synastry (comparing two charts side by side) and composite charts (a merged chart for the relationship itself).
How it works
To evaluate compatibility, astrologers look at how planets in one person's chart interact with planets in the other's. Key aspects include conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares, and sextiles. For example, a Venus-Mars connection often indicates strong chemistry, while a Saturn-Moon square might point to emotional restrictions. The houses where these contacts occur also matter: a Venus in the 7th house of the other's chart suggests a harmonious partnership, while a Pluto in the 4th could stir deep but intense domestic dynamics.
In practice
When reading compatibility, focus on the most personal planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) and the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven). A strong Moon connection often means emotional understanding, while Mars aspects show how you handle conflict and passion. No chart is perfect — every relationship has both supportive and challenging aspects. The goal is to see where you naturally align and where you might need extra effort. Astraly's People & Compatibility feature lets you add partners and friends to see your synastry bi-wheel and five role-aware compatibility scales.
