Relationship Chart

A composite or Davison chart that blends two natal charts to reveal the dynamics of a relationship.

A Relationship Chart is a specialized astrological chart created by combining the natal charts of two individuals to reveal the dynamics of their relationship. Unlike synastry, which compares two separate charts, a Relationship Chart treats the relationship itself as a single entity, offering insight into its strengths, challenges, and purpose.

How it works

There are two main types: the Composite Chart and the Davison Chart. The Composite Chart is calculated by taking the midpoint of each planet, the Sun, the Moon, and the angles between the two birth charts. The Davison Chart, on the other hand, uses the midpoint of the birth times and locations to calculate a hypothetical birth chart for the relationship. Both methods produce a single chart that represents the relationship as a third entity. Astrologers often use the Composite Chart for its simplicity, while the Davison Chart is preferred when the relationship has a clear starting point.

In practice

When interpreting a Relationship Chart, look at the Sun and Moon signs for the relationship's core identity and emotional needs. The Ascendant reveals how the relationship appears to others. Challenging aspects (e.g., squares or oppositions) highlight areas of tension that need work, while harmonious aspects (trines, sextiles) show natural flow. For example, a Composite Venus in Pisces might indicate a deeply compassionate bond, while a Saturn square could point to commitment issues. Use this chart alongside synastry for a fuller picture.
