Can AI read my birth chart?

Calculating the chart
Astronomy. One correct answer for your birth data. Needs an ephemeris or planetary theory, not a language model.
Interpreting the chart
Language. Many reasonable readings. This is where AI can help, as long as it works from the calculated chart.
Reading a chart is two different jobs
A birth chart is astronomy first. Given your birth date, time and place, there's exactly one correct answer for where the Sun, Moon and planets were, which sign rose on the eastern horizon, and where each house begins. Software computes this from planetary theories or ephemerides, such as the Swiss Ephemeris, which Astrodienst builds on NASA JPL data.[1]
Interpretation is language. What does a Moon in Scorpio in the 4th house suggest about how you handle feelings at home? There's no single correct answer here, only a tradition of meanings and the skill of applying them to one person. This is the part where an AI can help.
Where AI gets birth charts wrong
Ask a general chatbot "what's my rising sign if I was born on 3 May 1994 at 6:40 in Lisbon?" and it may give you a confident answer without calculating anything. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours and depends on the exact time, the place and the time-zone rules in force that day. A guess can easily land on the wrong sign.
The same goes for the Moon, which changes sign about every two and a half days, and for house placements, which depend on the house system. Errors here are hard to spot because the interpretation that follows still sounds plausible.
The second failure is drift. Even with correct positions in the conversation, an AI can later mention a placement you don't have. A well-built app guards against this by giving the AI only the calculated chart and telling it never to state a position that isn't in it.
What AI does well with a real chart
Given correct positions, an AI is good at the parts people find hardest: putting several placements together instead of reading them one by one, explaining jargon in plain words, relating a transit to your situation, and answering "but what does that mean for me?" as many times as you need.
It can't promise accuracy about your future, and neither can a human astrologer. Astrology is an interpretive, symbolic system, not a validated science. Use it as a lens for reflection and timing, not as a prediction.
How Astraly splits the work
In Astraly, the chart is calculated, never generated. Planet positions come from the VSOP87 planetary theory, houses from the Placidus system (Equal houses above 66° latitude, where Placidus is undefined), and your birth time is converted with the historical time-zone rules for your birth place. The same birth data always gives the same chart.
The AI astrologer receives that chart and today's transits, and it's instructed never to recall or estimate a planetary position from memory: for any other date it calls the calculation engine. The full method, with its accuracy limits, is on our How it works page.
Five ways to check any AI astrology reading[2]
- 1Check the Big Three first. Compare the Sun, Moon and rising sign the AI uses with a chart from a free ephemeris-based calculator, such as Astrodienst's free chart drawing or our free natal chart calculator, using the same birth data.
- 2Check degrees, not only signs. A planet at 29° of a sign behaves very differently in transits from one at 1°. Positions should agree to within a fraction of a degree.
- 3Ask which house system it used. Placidus and Whole Sign can put the same planet in different houses. Neither is wrong, but the reading should say which it uses.
- 4Ask it to show its working. A good reading names the placement or aspect behind each statement. If it can't, treat the statement as generic.
- 5Watch for certainty. Phrases like "you will meet someone on Tuesday" are a red flag in any reading, AI or human.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT calculate my birth chart?
A general chatbot without a calculation tool can't be relied on for positions; it may produce plausible but wrong placements. Calculate the chart with an ephemeris-based tool first, then use AI to discuss it.
Is an AI astrology reading accurate?
The positions can be exact if they come from a proper calculation. The interpretation is as good as the astrology behind it and how well it fits your life. No reading, AI or human, can guarantee what will happen.
Does Astraly's AI invent placements?
It shouldn't, by design. Astraly calculates your chart before the AI sees it and instructs the AI to use only those positions. If you ever spot a placement that doesn't match your chart, tell us at support@astraly.app.
Do I need my birth time?
For the rising sign and houses, yes. Without it, the planets' signs are still mostly reliable, but the Moon can be uncertain on the day it changes sign.
Is there an astrology app that doesn't use AI?
Yes. Some apps say all their content is written by human astrologers. Our comparison of astrology apps lists which ones say so, with links to their own statements.
