Imum Coeli

The Imum Coeli (IC) is the lowest point in a natal chart, representing home, roots, family, and private life.

The Imum Coeli (IC) is one of the four cardinal points in a natal chart, located at the bottom of the chart wheel. It marks the cusp of the Fourth House and represents the deepest part of your private life: your home, family origins, roots, and innermost emotional foundation. In Latin, Imum Coeli means "bottom of the sky."

How it works

In a natal chart, the IC is the point exactly opposite the Midheaven (MC). It is determined by the exact time and location of birth. The sign on the IC describes the atmosphere you need to feel secure and the kind of home environment you naturally create. The house placement of the IC ruler (the planet ruling that sign) shows where you seek emotional safety. For example, an IC in Cancer often indicates a strong attachment to family and a nurturing home, while an IC in Capricorn may suggest a need for structure and responsibility in domestic life.

In practice

When interpreting a chart, the IC reveals your private self—the person you are behind closed doors. It can show patterns inherited from your family or early childhood. Transits to the IC often coincide with major life changes related to home, moving, or family matters. For instance, Saturn transiting the IC might bring a period of taking on more domestic responsibilities or dealing with aging parents.

Explore your own IC by generating your natal chart and looking for the point at the bottom of the wheel. Understanding your IC can help you create a home and inner life that truly supports you.
