Mars

Mars is the planet of action, drive, and desire in astrology, representing how you assert yourself and pursue what you want.

Mars is one of the personal planets in astrology, symbolizing raw energy, initiative, and the way you go after your goals. It rules Aries and was the traditional ruler of Scorpio before Pluto's discovery. In a natal chart, Mars shows where you have drive, how you express anger, and what motivates you to take action.

How it works

Mars moves through the zodiac in about two years, spending roughly two months in each sign. Its placement by sign colors your style of assertion—for example, Mars in Aries is direct and impulsive, while Mars in Libra may act through diplomacy or partnership. The house Mars occupies reveals the life area where you channel your energy most intensely. Aspects to Mars modify its expression: a square to Saturn can bring frustration or discipline, while a trine to Jupiter may amplify confidence. Mars also rules your physical stamina and competitive edge.

In practice

When interpreting Mars in a reading, notice which sign and house it sits in, and any challenging aspects. A strong Mars can indicate a person who takes initiative easily, while a weakened Mars (e.g., in fall or retrograde) might struggle with motivation or anger management. Mars transits often trigger events that require action, conflict, or courage. For example, Mars transiting your 10th house could coincide with career ambition or workplace disputes.

To see where Mars lands in your own chart, build your natal chart and look for the red symbol ♂. Pay attention to its sign and house—they reveal your unique drive and how to channel it productively.
