Cardinal Signs

The four zodiac signs that initiate each season and are known for their leadership, action, and drive.

Cardinal signs are the four zodiac signs that mark the beginning of each season: Aries (spring), Cancer (summer), Libra (autumn), and Capricorn (winter). In astrology, they are associated with initiation, leadership, and forward momentum. People with strong cardinal placements tend to be self-starters who thrive on new projects and challenges.

How it works

In a natal chart, cardinal signs occupy the first point of each season. They are one of three modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Cardinal signs are action-oriented: they start things. Aries initiates with courage, Cancer starts by nurturing, Libra begins through partnership, and Capricorn launches with discipline. If you have several planets in cardinal signs, you may feel a natural urge to lead and take initiative. The house positions of those planets show where you express that drive.

In practice

When reading a chart, cardinal placements often indicate areas where you take charge. For example, a cardinal Sun (especially in Aries or Capricorn) can suggest a person who prefers to lead rather than follow. Cardinal Moon signs may need to actively manage emotions by starting new routines. In synastry, cardinal planets between two charts can create dynamic, initiating energy — but also potential power struggles if both want to lead. Notice if cardinal signs are emphasized: they suggest a life path built on bold beginnings.
