Constellation
A constellation is a group of stars forming a recognizable pattern, traditionally named after mythological figures or objects.
A constellation is a defined area of the sky containing a group of stars that appear to form a pattern or outline, typically representing an animal, mythological person, or inanimate object. In astronomy, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations that divide the celestial sphere. Constellations are used as a reference grid for locating stars and other celestial objects.
How it works
Constellations are based on the apparent positions of stars as seen from Earth. They are not physically connected; the stars may be at vastly different distances. In astrology, the zodiac signs are derived from the constellations along the ecliptic, but due to precession of the equinoxes, the astrological signs no longer align with the actual constellations. For example, the Sun passes through the constellation Ophiuchus for about 18 days each year, but Ophiuchus is not a zodiac sign in Western astrology.
In practice
While astrologers primarily work with the tropical zodiac (based on seasons), some modern astrologers consider the actual constellations for a more astronomical approach. When reading a natal chart, the positions of planets relative to the fixed stars in constellations can add nuance. For instance, a planet conjunct a bright fixed star like Regulus (in Leo) may emphasize leadership qualities. However, the primary framework remains the signs and houses.
Constellations are also relevant in sidereal astrology, which uses the actual positions of constellations. Most Western astrologers, however, stick to the tropical system. Understanding the difference helps clarify why the Sun sign dates you see in newspapers don't match the sky.
