Polarity
Polarity describes the complementary relationship between opposite signs, elements, or houses in astrology.
In astrology, polarity refers to the dynamic relationship between two opposite points on the zodiac wheel, such as Aries–Libra or Taurus–Scorpio. Each sign has a polar opposite that balances its energy, creating a complementary pair. The concept extends to elements (fire/air vs. earth/water) and houses (e.g., 1st vs. 7th house). Polarity highlights how seemingly opposing forces actually work together to create wholeness.
How it works
Every sign belongs to one of two polarities: active (yang, masculine, outward) or receptive (yin, feminine, inward). The six active signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. The six receptive signs are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. Opposite signs share the same modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) but have opposite polarities. For example, cardinal fire Aries (active) opposes cardinal air Libra (active? Actually Libra is active too — polarity is more nuanced). In practice, polarities are seen in aspects like oppositions, where planets in opposite signs create tension that can be integrated. In a natal chart, planets in opposite houses (e.g., 1st and 7th) also reflect polarity themes.
In practice
When reading a chart, notice planets in opposite signs or houses. For instance, Sun in Aries opposite Moon in Libra suggests a push-pull between independence and partnership. Polarity teaches that balance comes from honoring both sides. In synastry, opposite signs between two charts often indicate strong attraction or friction that can lead to growth. Understanding polarity helps you see how contrasts in your chart are not flaws but invitations to integrate complementary energies.
