Natal Astrology
Natal astrology interprets a person's birth chart to reveal character, life themes, and potential paths.
Natal astrology is the branch of astrology that interprets a person's birth chart (or natal chart) — a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of birth. It reveals personality traits, life themes, strengths, challenges, and potential paths. Unlike horary or electional astrology, which answer specific questions or pick auspicious times, natal astrology focuses on the individual's core nature and life journey.
How it works
A natal chart is calculated using your birth date, time, and location. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other points in the zodiac signs and houses. Each planet represents a different part of your psyche (e.g., Mercury rules communication, Venus rules love). The signs color how those planets express themselves, and the houses show which life areas are emphasized. Aspects — angles between planets — indicate how these energies interact, creating harmony or tension. For example, a Sun-Moon square might suggest inner conflict between your will and emotions.
In practice
When reading a natal chart, astrologers first look at the "Big Three": Sun (core identity), Moon (emotional nature), and Ascendant (outer personality). Then they examine the chart ruler (planet ruling the Ascendant), the placement of personal planets, and major aspects. Natal astrology is not deterministic — it describes tendencies and potentials, not fixed outcomes. It helps you understand your natural strengths, recurring patterns, and areas for growth. For instance, someone with Mars in the 4th house might channel their drive into home projects or family dynamics.
