Fourth House

The Fourth House in astrology represents home, family, roots, and the inner emotional foundation of a person's life.

The Fourth House is one of the angular houses in astrology, traditionally associated with the home, family, ancestry, and one's private life. It sits at the bottom of the chart (the Imum Coeli or IC) and represents the foundation upon which a person builds their life—both literally in terms of physical home and figuratively as emotional security.

How it works

In a natal chart, the sign on the cusp of the Fourth House and any planets within it reveal a person's relationship with their family of origin, their sense of belonging, and what makes them feel safe. For example, Moon in the Fourth House often indicates a strong emotional bond with home and family, while Saturn here can suggest early responsibilities or a reserved home environment. The IC (the cusp of the Fourth House) is one of the four cardinal points and marks the deepest, most private part of the self.

In practice

When interpreting the Fourth House, consider how a person's upbringing shapes their adult choices about home and family. A well-aspected Fourth House can indicate a supportive family background, while challenging aspects may point to unresolved family dynamics. This house also rules the later years of life—retirement, aging, and one's final home. In a reading, it often comes up when discussing where someone feels most at ease or what they need to feel grounded.
