House

A house in astrology represents a specific area of life, like career, relationships, or home, based on the sky at your birth.

In astrology, a house is one of twelve segments of the birth chart that represent different areas of life. Each house corresponds to a specific domain—such as identity, money, communication, home, romance, career, and spirituality—and is ruled by a zodiac sign. The planets placed in a house show where your energy and focus naturally flow in that area.

How it works

Houses are determined by your exact birth time and location. The Ascendant (rising sign) marks the cusp of the 1st House, and the other houses follow in order counterclockwise. The system most commonly used is the Placidus house system, but others like Whole Sign or Equal House exist. For example, if your 10th House cusp is in Capricorn and Saturn (its ruler) is in the 1st House, your career path may be tied to personal discipline and public recognition.

In practice

When reading a chart, look at which houses contain planets. A stellium (three or more planets) in one house highlights a major life theme. For instance, Venus in the 7th House often points to harmony in partnerships, while Mars in the 12th may indicate hidden drive or private struggles. Also note the house ruler—the planet that rules the sign on the house cusp—to understand how that area of life is activated.

To explore your own houses, generate your birth chart and see which planets fall in each area.
