Soft Aspect

A harmonious angle between two planets that creates ease, flow, and natural talent.

A soft aspect is an angle between two planets in a natal chart that is considered harmonious or easy. These aspects suggest a natural flow of energy between the planets involved, often indicating talents, comfort zones, and areas where life feels less effortful. The two main soft aspects are the trine (120°) and the sextile (60°).

How it works

In a natal chart, soft aspects are calculated by dividing the 360° circle by 3 (trine) or 6 (sextile). A trine creates a smooth, supportive connection, often between planets in the same element (fire, earth, air, water). For example, Sun trine Moon suggests inner harmony between one's core identity and emotions. A sextile is a gentler opportunity, requiring a little conscious effort to activate. Planets in sextile are usually in complementary elements (e.g., fire and air).

In practice

When a soft aspect appears in a reading, it points to a natural gift or an area of ease. For instance, Venus trine Jupiter often indicates a generous, lucky approach to relationships and money. However, soft aspects can also lead to complacency – the native may rely too much on the easy flow and not develop the related skills. A balanced chart includes both soft and hard aspects for growth.
